We talk so matter-of-factly about service time management/shenanigans that I think we sometimes forget that it's fundamentally pretty skeevy, anti-competetive, and hurts both the fans and the player concerned. If the Marlins determined that Jose Fernandez was ready for the Majors in April then it was absolutely in the best interest of Fernandez to promote him. It's both incredibly sad and sort of funny that the possibility that the Marlins were simply doing right by the player was never mentioned.
(Which isn't to say that it's inaccurate to completely discount it.)
