- Pirates SP Francisco Liriano was a complete disaster, giving up a career-high 10 runs over 2 1/3 innings.

- Royals OF Justin Maxwell went 3-for-5 including a solo homer.
- Royals RP Greg Holland worked a perfect ninth inning, preserving a three-run advantage and earning his 31st save of the season.
- Royals SP Ervin Santana lasted just 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision, getting knocked around to the tune of six runs on nine hits.
- Red Sox DH David Ortiz smashed his 22nd homer of the season in a losing effort.
- Red Sox SP Jake Peavy was hammered in a no-decision, allowing six runs on 10 hits over five-plus innings of work.
(50-62) Twins - 7 at 5 - White Sox (43-70) (Game 1)
- Twins 1B Justin Morneau delivered a grand slam and a solo shot for insurance.
- Twins SP Kyle Gibson yielded three runs in 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision.
- White Sox SP John Danks struck out nine while allowing three runs in six-plus innings.
- Batting third for the first time in his career, White Sox SS Alexei Ramirez had a two-run homer and a two-run single.

- Twins OF Oswaldo Arcia belted a solo homer in the 10th inning.
- Twins RP Glen Perkins slammed the door in the 10th inning, protecting a one-run lead and earning his 28th save of the season.
- Twins SP Liam Hendriks pitched well in his spot start during the nightcap, allowing a pair of runs on seven hits over six innings.
- White Sox SS Alexei Ramirez went 1-for-5 with a solo homer.
- White Sox SP Charles Leesman pitched well in a no-decision, allowing one run on four hits over five frames.
(68-46) Tigers - 3 at 4 - Yankees (58-56) (10 innings)
- Yankees OF Brett Gardner delivered a two-out, game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning.
- Yankees RP Mariano Rivera blew his second consecutive save chance, surrendering a two-out, game-tying homer to Miguel Cabrera.
- Yankees SP Ivan Nova pitched extremely well in a no-decision, allowing one run on eight hits over seven strong innings of work.
- Tigers 3B Miguel Cabrera blasted a two-out, game-tying homer in the ninth inning, but it wasn't enough.
- Tigers SP Rick Porcello pitched decently, allowing three runs on six hits over his five innings of work.
(65-49) Athletics - 14 at 6 - Blue Jays (53-62)
- Athletics OF Josh Reddick had a power explosion, going deep three times while driving in five runs.
- Athletics SP Jarrod Parker yielded three runs over six innings.
- Blue Jays RP Esmil Rogers was hammered seven runs over three innings.
- Athletics SS Jed Lowrie reached base in all five plate appearances, going 4-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, a walk, and two runs scored.
- Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista finished 3-for-5 with a solo homer.
(66-50) Rangers - 9 at 5 - Astros (37-77)
Inter League:
(66-48) Rays - 6 at 7 - Dodgers (65-50)
- Dodgers 2B Mark Ellis went 3-for-4 and tripled as part of a ninth-inning rally.
- Rays SP David Price was stellar again, allowing just an unearned run over seven innings.
- Rays RP Fernando Rodney blew a save and took a loss in spectacular fashion, giving up four runs -- three earned -- while getting just one out in the ninth.
(50-66) Brewers - 10 at 5 - Mariners (53-62)
(64-51) Orioles - 5 at 2 - Giants (51-64) (10 innings)
- Orioles 1B Chris Davis delivered a two-run double in the top of the 10th.
- Orioles SP Chris Tillman fanned nine while allowing one run in eight innings.
- Orioles RP Jim Johnson gave up a run in the ninth to take his seventh blown save.
- Orioles RP Tommy Hunter pitched a scoreless 10th with a three-run lead for a save.
- Giants SP Ryan Vogelsong pitched six innings of two-run ball in his return from the disabled list.

National League:
- Marlins purchased the contract of C Koyie Hill from Triple-A New Orleans.
- Marlins optioned C Rob Brantly to Triple-A New Orleans.
- Phillies designated OF Delmon Young for assignment.
- Rockies recalled LHP Christian Friedrich; placed him on the 60-day disabled list with lower back inflammation.
- Giants activated RHP Ryan Vogelsong from the 60-day disabled list.
- Giants optioned RHP Jean Machi to Triple-A Fresno.
- Reds placed C Corky Miller on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 8, with a right quad contusion.
- Reds activated C Ryan Hanigan from the 15-day disabled list.
- Braves activated OF Jordan Schafer from the 15-day disabled list.
- Braves optioned OF Jose Constanza to Triple-A Gwinnett.
American League:
- Athletics optioned RHP Evan Scribner to Triple-A Sacramento.
- Rays designated RHP Kyle Farnsworth for assignment.
- Rangers acquired OF Alex Rios and cash considerations from the White Sox in exchange for a player to be named later.
- MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reports that the Rangers will send 2B Leury Garcia to the White Sox in the Alex Rios deal.
- Indians recalled RHP Carlos Carrasco from Triple-A Columbus.
- Twins recalled RHP Liam Hendriks from Triple-A Rochester.
- Rays recalled RHP Josh Lueke from Triple-A Durham.
- White Sox recalled OF Blake Tekotte from Triple-A Charlotte.
- White Sox purchased the contract of LHP Charlie Leesman from Triple-A Charlotte.
- CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that White Sox 1B Adam Dunn has passed through waivers.
- Twins placed C/OF Ryan Doumit on the 7-day disabled list, retroactive to August 8, with a concussion.
- Twins activated OF Josh Willingham from the 15-day disabled list.
- Athletics transferred C John Jaso from the 7-day disabled list to the 15-day disabled list.
- Red Sox OF Jackie Bradley, Jr. has been activated from the 7-day disabled list with Triple-A Pawtucket.
- White Sox recalled OF Avisail Garcia from Triple-A Charlotte.
- White Sox optioned LHP Charlie Leesman to Triple-A Charlotte.
Injury Updates:
National League:
- Rockies SP Tyler Chatwood's (elbow) MRI revealed no structural damage.
- Phillies SP Roy Halladay (shoulder) will throw a simulated game at the Phillies' spring training complex in Clearwater, Florida on Saturday.
- Dodgers manager Don Mattingly clarified that RP Brian Wilson (elbow) will work in a setup role in front of closer Kenley Jansen once he returns from the disabled list.
- Reds OF Ryan Ludwick (shoulder) is expected to return from the disabled list on Monday.
- Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Friday that OF Matt Kemp (ankle) is roughly 10-14 days away from returning to the lineup.
- Brewers 2B Rickie Weeks (hamstring) will need surgery on his injured left hamstring, and will miss the remainder of the 2013 season.
- SP Ross Detwiler (back) is reportedly "way ahead of schedule" in his recovery from a herniated disc in his lower back, and there's a chance that he could rejoin the Nationals before the end of the season.
- Cubs C Diaoner Navarro is expected to avoid the disabled list after being diagnosed with a mild ankle sprain.
- Reds RP Sean Marshall (shoulder) hasn't resumed throwing.
- Cubs OF Jorge Soler (leg) will be examined Monday in Chicago.
- Cubs RP Matt Guerrier is dealing with a flexor mass injury to his right elbow.
- Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) is slated to throw 25 pitches in a bullpen session Saturday.
- Padres OF Kyle Blanks (Achilles) will attempt to resume running when the Padres are in Colorado next week.
- Rockies RP Rafael Betancourt (appendicitis) threw a bullpen session Friday.
- Padres OF Carlos Quentin (knee) will likely be placed on the disabled after Friday's game.
- Reds RP Nick Masset will undergo season-ending surgery next week for thoracic outlet syndrome.
- Braves C Gerald Laird (kidney stone) will catch and bat second Friday in a rehab game with Triple-A Gwinnett.
- Cardinals C Yadier Molina (knee) hit in the batting cage Friday.
- Nationals RP Ross Ohlendorf (shoulder) will make a minor league rehab start Saturday with Triple-A Syracuse.
- Reds SP Johnny Cueto (lat) hasn't resumed throwing.
American League:
- Blue Jays C J.P. Arencibia underwent an MRI on his sore right knee.
- Tigers C Alex Avila has been cleared to return to action after passing concussion tests.
- Rays SP Matt Moore (elbow) will throw a bullpen session on Saturday or Sunday if he gets through another game of catch Friday with no issues.
- The Astros expect SS Jonathan Villar (thumb) to play at some point in this weekend's series against the Rangers.
- Mariners C Jesus Sucre (hand) began a rehab assignment with the Mariners' Arizona League affiliate Thursday.
- Blue Jays RP Juan Perez will head for further testing after being removed from Friday's game with an undisclosed elbow injury.
- Rangers SP Matt Harrison was removed from Friday's minor league rehab start with Double-A Frisco due to numbness in his left hand.
- Rangers DH Lance Berkman (knee) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday.
- SP Alex Cobb (concussion) tossed 4 1/3 innings in a minor league rehab start for High-A Charlotte on Friday, and afterwards declared himself ready to return to the Rays rotation.
- Astros OF J.D. Martinez (wrist) plans to play winter ball over the offseason in an effort to make up for the time he's lost due to injury this season.
- O's manager Buck Showalter indicated Friday that SP Jason Hammel (forearm) won't return from the disabled list when first eligible.
- Rays SP Chris Archer indicated that everything felt normal after playing catch on Friday and that he'll make his next scheduled start on Tuesday.
- Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (shoulder) said his 40-pitch bullpen session went well on Friday.
- Athletics SP Brett Anderson (foot) will throw simulated games Saturday and Tuesday.
- Royals C Salvador Perez (concussion) has been cleared for more activities.
- Athletics C John Jaso (concussion) has yet to resume baseball activities.
- Angels 2B Howie Kendrick (knee) could be placed on the disabled list.
- Tigers manager Jim Leyland said that 2B Omar Infante (ankle) could be activated from the disabled list Monday.
- Angels SP Jason Vargas (arm) hopes to be activated from the disabled list to start next week against the Yankees.
Notes and Rumors
National League:
- Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes that Cardinals SP Michael Wacha "isn’t going anywhere" after his start on Saturday.
- FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that SP Kyle Lohse was claimed off waivers but pulled back after the Brewers couldn't work out a deal with the claiming team.
- Mets' skipper Terry Collins indicated Friday that he has not committed to RP LaTroy Hawkins as his closer while Bobby Parnell is sidelined.
American League
- Astros pitching prospect Mark Appel could be promoted again after making one more start with Low-A Quad Cities.
