1998 Internet Baseball Awards Results

Welcome to the festivities!

We're here to announce the winners of the 7th Annual Internet Baseball Awards. Over 600 knowledgable cyberspace baseball fans participated in this effort to select the baseball players whose 1998 seasons were most deserving of honors.

This year, for the second year in a row, the balloting was conducted primarily over the world wide web, with over 95% of this year's ballots entered thru our exclusively comprehensive web ballot designed by famed superhero David Pease.

The point system for the balloting was as follows:

• Player of the Year Ballots: 14 points for 1st place votes, 9 points for 2nd place votes, 8 for 3rd, etc.,down to 1 for 10th.
• Pitcher of the Year Ballots: 10 points for 1st place votes, 7 points for 2nd place votes, 5 for 3rd, 3 for fourth, and 1 for fifth. (This is the one award where our point system differs from the BBWAA point system, since we use a longer ballot.)
• Rookie of the Year Ballots: 5 points for 1st place votes, 3 for second place votes, and 1 for third.
• Manager of the Year Ballots: 5 points for 1st place votes, 3 for second place votes, and 1 for third.

This year's awards were helped along by the fine folks at the Baseball Prospectus, the exclusive sponsor of the Internet Awards for the last several years. All of us associated with the Awards greatly appreciate the work of the voters, especially the ones who give their votes plenty of thought.

This year's Internet NL Player of the Year race was won by little-known Cardinals' first baseman, Mark McGwire, who set a few all-time records with a wee bit of fanfare. Sammy Sosa, who competed with McGwire in chasing some of these records, finished solidly in second. Barry Bonds finished third, continuing his tradition of finishing in the top four every single year the Internet NL Player of the Year has been voted upon. Last year's Internet NL Player of the Year, Mike Piazza, finished sixth, while last year's BBWAA NL Player of the Year, Larry Walker, finished sixteenth. Greg Maddux was the highest ranking pitcher, finishing ninth.

The 1998 Internet AL Player of the Year race was the most wild we've ever seen. Almost no one would have guessed that last year's Internet AL Rookie of the Year, Nomar Garciaparra, would end up as this year's Internet AL Player of the Year, but he did, edging out fellow shortstop phenom (and former Internet AL Player of the Year winner) Alex Rodriguez. Albert Belle, who once again owned the most productive bat in the American League in 1998, actually received the most first-place votes of anybody but finished in third place, while last year's Internet AL Player of the Year winner, Ken Griffey Jr., finished in fourth place. The record-setting Yankees landed two players in the top ten: Bernie Williams, who certainly would have finished higher had he not lost a month of the season to injury, wound up in fifth, and Derek Jeter, the other member of the highly regarded young AL shortstop troika, finished ninth. The highest-ranking pitcher, Roger Clemens, finished seventh.

The 1998 Internet NL Pitcher of the Year was a battle of three pitchers who had previously won the award: Greg Maddux, Kevin Brown, and Tom Glavine. Few voters considered any interlopers; only Trevor Hoffman, the Padres' star closer who finished fourth, also received a significant number of first place votes. Maddux ended up the winner, as he previously had in 1992, 1993 and 1995. But it wasn't as easy a victory for Maddux, the NL ERA leader this year, as it had been in his previous winning years. His late season fade earned him strong competition from Brown (who was actually named on more ballots than Maddux) and Glavine in a race that looked like a runaway win for Maddux up through mid-August.

For the second year in a row, Roger Clemens ran away with the 1998 Internet AL Pitcher of the Year award, winning over 90% of the first place votes. While he didn't have the career season he had in 1997, voters overwhelmingly felt that he clearly edged out last year's Internet NL Pitcher of the Year

winner, Pedro Martinez, who himself received over three-quarters of the second place votes cast. Yankee starters David "Perfect Game" Wells and David Cone finished third and fourth, respectively, while ex-Yankee and comeback player of the year candidate Kenny Rogers finished fifth. Red Sox closer Tom Gordon finished as the highest ranking reliever in sixth place.

The 1998 Internet NL Rookie of the Year Award was won easily by Kerry Wood, the young Cub phenom who looked far from ready for the majors as he battled the strike zone last year, but who quickly blossomed into a star with his record-tying 20-strikeout game. Todd Helton, the Rockies' young first baseman who flourished during the second half, finished in second place, while Kerry Ligtenberg, the ex-Northern Leaguer closer of the falsely maligned Braves bullpen, ended up in third place. Uberprospect Travis Lee had a solid first half, but an awful, injury-plagued second half led to a disappointing (relative to preseason predictions) fourth place finish. Unheralded Japanese import Masato Yoshii finished fifth.

Ben Grieve may not have been the most valuable AL rookie in 1998, but voters awarded the young superstar-in-the-making the Internet AL Rookie of the Year award anyway. The much-hyped Grieve lived up to his press in every way the first four months of the season before struggling somewhat in August and September. Rolando Arrojo and Orlando Hernandez, both experienced pitchers from Cuba, finished second and third respectively. Mike Caruso, the raw but talented White Sox shortstop who made the jump to the majors straight from A ball, finished fourth, while Richie Sexson, the late season offensive sensation out of the Indians farm system, finished fifth.

In the first-ever Internet Awards voting for Manager of the Year, in the National League, leading teams to division titles proved to be the way to get votes. Second-year manager and BP favorite Larry Dierker led his Houston Astros to the Central division title and finished first in the voting, while his fellow division-winning managers, Bruce Bochy of the Padres and Bobby Cox of the Braves, finished second and third respectively. The Internet AL Manager of the Year voting went similarly, with Joe Torre winning the award easily thanks to his record-breaking Yankees and Johnny Oates finishing in third thanks to the Rangers' division victory, but second place ended up with Jimy Williams, whose Red Sox earned the wild card while Mike Hargrove, whose Indians won the AL Central crown, finished way back in sixth.
