Weekly #streameroftheday Update

by Bret Sayre

For those of you unfamiliar with the #streameroftheday process, I recommend one starting pitcher per day who is owned in fewer than 10% of leagues (lower than your typical standards) and post it on Twitter at @dynastyguru. And this Friday post is where I stand in front of the firing squad, fully accountable for these recommendations. I ran a longer introduction in my first post of the season, explaining why my ownership limit is much lower than most others out there, but essentially it's to be helpful in deeper mixed leagues. If you want to read the whole thing, the link is here. With the pleasantries out of the way, let's jump into the action.

Here were the details for the last seven days:

Date Pitcher Opp IP ER H BB K Dec
5/31/13 Shaun Marcum MIA 6 2/3 4 7 2 4 Loss
6/1/13 Dan Straily CHW 6 1 6 0 8 ND
6/2/13 Kevin Slowey NYM 4 1/3 6 6 2 3 ND
6/3/13 Joe Saunders CHW 6 1/3 1 5 1 5 Win
6/4/13 Jonathan Pettibone MIA 6 1 7 2 1 ND
6/5/13 Dillon Gee WSH 7 1 9 1 7 Win
6/6/13 Shaun Marcum WSH PO S T PO N ED

It's never a bad thing when I only have two starts for a given week where my streamer allows more than one run. And even Marcum's start wasn't as bad as it seemed--he was cruising with six scoreless innings before coming unglued in the seventh. Dan Straily turned in his third, and potentially final, #streameroftheday performance on Saturday and it was a great outing against a relatively punchless White Sox offense. That same offense was the victim of Joe Saunders on Monday, who has turned into an extremely sneaky streamer when he's pitching at home. At Safeco this year, Saunders is 4-1 with a 2.25 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 27-10 K/BB rate in 40 innings. That actually looks like the line of a real pitcher, doesn't it? Pettibone did what he was supposed to do against the Marlins, and Dillon Gee continued his comeback tour with a very strong start against the Nationals. If you're counting at home, I've now used Gee more than any other pitcher so far this year in this space, as he made his 5th appearance (though one was rained out). And it certainly won't be the last, unless he starts getting snatched up in more leagues.

And here are my overall numbers for both the week and the season:

Wins Win% IP ERA WHIP K K/9
Week 2 33% 36 1/3 3.47 1.32 28 6.94
Season 26 41% 354 1/3 4.70 1.39 261 6.63

A pretty solid week all around, so nothing to either pat myself on the back or complain about. And to start the next week, I'm going to test if you truly can stream anyone against the Royals these days (who just allowed a quality start to Mike Pelfrey) when I roll Jordan Lyles out there for his 2013 #streameroftheday debut.

See you again next week.
