Minor League Update

It occurs to me very early on that it's going to be difficult to write about pitchers in the bat-heavy, ball-jumpy context of the Arizona Fall League...

• Cody Asche, 3B, Phillies (22) (Peoria): 2-for-4, 2 2B (2), RBI, BB. Philadelphia’s fourth-round pick out of Nebraska in 2011, Asche turned himself into a legitimate prospect with a .324/.369/.481 season split between High-A and Double-A.
• Matt Davidson, 3B, Diamondbacks (21) (Salt River): 2-for-4, HR (1), 3 R, 4 RBI, BB, K. Established a career high with 23 home runs at Double-A Mobile during the regular season while also increasing his walk rate and cutting down on strikeouts.
• Brian Goodwin, CF, Nationals (21) (Salt River): 2-for-5, HR (1), 2 R, BB. The first pick of the 2011 supplemental first round, Goodwin reached Double-A in his first full season; hit .280/.384/.469 89-61 overall.
• Chris McGuiness, 1B, Rangers (24) (Surprise): 4-for-5, 2B (1), HR (1), K. Former Boston 13th-round pick, McGuiness is a fringy bat-only first baseman with a good batting eye (14.3 percent walk rate in four minor-league seasons).
• Kevin Pillar, LF, Blue Jays (23) (Salt River): 2-for-4, HR (1), BB. An afterthought in the 2011 draft – Toronto picked him up in the 32nd round out of Cal State Dominguez Hills – Pillar surprised by hitting .323/.374/.439 70-40 between the Midwest and Florida State Leagues. The bat is interesting, but he’ll turn 24 in January.
• Chris Reed, LHP, Dodgers (22) (Mesa): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB. The only one of eight Mesa hurlers to not allow a base runner.
• Jonathan Singleton, 1B, Astros  (21) (Mesa): 2-for-4, 3B (1), HR (1), 3 RBI. He’s limited athletically and defensively, but no one doubts he can hit; set career highs with 21 home runs, 88 walks, and 229 total bases during the regular season while hitting .284/.396/.497 at Double-A Corpus Christi.
• Matthew Skole, 3B/1B, Nationals (23) (Salt River): 3-for-5, 2B (1), HR (1), 3 RBI. Playing first base in deference to Arizona’s Matt Davidson; second in the league with a 2067 OPS.
