Tater Trot Tracker

Trot Times for September 4

by Larry Granillo

Let's get right to the trots. The "Mad Men" cast is calling...

Home Run of the Day: Giancarlo Stanton, Miami Marlins - 18.44 seconds [video]
The 30th home run of the year for the 22-year-old. It's the second 30 homer season of his career. He is now only the fifth player in history to do that, joining Eddie Matthews, Jimmie Foxx, Albert Pujols, and Miguel Cabrera. The kid is something else.

Slowest Trot: Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers - 28.64 seconds [video]
Some might look at this trot time, see Miguel Cabrera's name and shrug their shoulders, as if to say that it's to be expected from Cabrera. However, Miggy's been - well, not exactly quick but certainly not slow this year. Before Tuesday, Cabrera had only two 25-second trots since the All-Star break, despite more than a dozen home runs. His slowest timed trot of the year was 25.78 seconds on May 15. All of that is to say I have no idea why Cabrera went for such a slow trot against the Indians on Tuesday. It happens, I guess. The next slowest trot was a 25.48 second trot from Franklin Gutierrez.

In Toronto, Baltimore first baseman hit a wall-scraper to left. The runners on base apparently were so unsure of if it were going over the fence or not that they didn't run, almost causing Reynolds to pass the baserunner at first. Luckily, he stopped at first until the call was known. This, however, means his trot does not count.

Quickest Trot: Jay Bruce, Cincinnati Reds - 18.19 seconds [video]
Bruce, with his 31st home run of the year, barely edges out Giancarlo Stanton and Kyle Seager for the quickest trot of the day. The best part of this trot, however, is Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins continuing to do the deke play at the cutoff spot even after the ball has already cleared the fence and the home run has been called.

Gorkys Hernandez hit his first career home run for the Marlins on Tuesday and trotted home in 20.49 seconds. Word is that he was in a rush to see a certain Kim Cattrall movie from the early-1980s. Also, on Monday, Carlos Gomez joined the top 10 quickest trots of the year (again) with a 16.78 second trot.
