Tater Trot Tracker

Trot Times for September 2

by Larry Granillo

Happy Labor Day, everyone! I hope you're lucky enough to spend it at a ballgame, eating some grilled burgers, or otherwise enjoying some most decidedly non-labor.

Let's get to the trots!

Home Run of the Day: Chipper Jones, Atlanta Braves - 29.21* seconds [video]
We'll talk about his slow trot in moment. Right now, let's enjoy another memorable moment for Chipper on his farewell tour, this time a three-run, walkoff blast at Turner Field with the Braves down two and with two outs. And it was no cheapie, landing up near the concourse in right-centerfield. ESPN's Hit Tracker calls it 443 feet.

Slowest Trot: Chipper Jones, Atlanta Braves - 29.21* seconds [video]
It's no secret that Chipper doesn't run all that fast anymore. Of his 14 home runs this year, the quickest that I have him timed is 23.18 seconds, though most fall in the 24.5 second range or slower. Prior to last night, he also owned the fourth slowest trot of the season. After this walkoff blast, Chipper now owns the fourth and fifth slowest trots of the season. One thing about this particular trot: walkoff scrums can be very difficult to see when the player touches home plate and this one was tougher than usual. The trot time could be anywhere between 28.9 seconds and 29.6 seconds, depending on when he likely stepped on the plate. After timing the trot over a dozen times, the 29.21 second time is the one that I'm most comfortable with.

Alfonso Soriano (26.61 seconds) and Ramon Hernandez (25.95 seconds) get off easy today.

Quickest Trot: Alejandro De Aza, Chicago White Sox - 17.88 seconds [video]
A leadoff homer for De Aza off of Detroit's Justin Verlander. The quick trot gave the White Sox an early lead, but it wasn't enough to win the game. The next quickest trot belonged to Texas' Jurickson Profar, who hit this home run in his first career at-bat. His 18.59 second trot was a nice introduction to the big leagues.
