Tater Trot Tracker

Trot Times for June 19

by Larry Granillo

It's been far too long, what with chats and other work stuff getting in the way of my normal Tater Trot Tracking time. Let's get to the trots!

Home Run of the Day: Jose Bautista, Toronto Blue Jays #2 - 21.86 seconds [video]
In the sixth inning on Tuesday, Colby Rasmus, Jose Bautista, and Edwin Encarnacion combined to go back-to-back-to-back off of Brewers pitcher Tyler Thornburg, who was making his Major League debut all the way up from Double-A. Thornburg had pitched fine up until that point, but the three straight home runs knocked him off the record for the game. In the ninth inning, this time with the Blue Jays down by one, Rasmus and Bautista combined to hit back-to-back home runs for the second time in the game. Bautista's blast also put the Jays ahead for good. If only Encarnacion had managed to hit one more home run...

Slowest Trot: Aramis Ramirez, Milwaukee Brewers - 26.04 seconds [video]
A grand slam by Ramirez that gave the Brewers the lead again after falling behind to the Jays following the three-home run barrage. Ramirez's home was a blast to deepest left field, nearly hitting the Harley-Davidson deck against the back wall of Miller Park.

Sunday's slowest trot belonged to Billy Butler, who circled the bases in 27.12 seconds. On Monday, Aramis Ramirez had a foul ball overruled into a home run. Though I don't normally time review lengths, Ramirez's seemed long enough to check out. From the moment the ball touched his bat to the moment Ramirez finally touched home, three-minutes and 43.18 seconds had passed.

Monday also saw another little league home run. Unlike Cabrera's, though, the one by Brandon Phillips was pretty run-of-the-mill. He came home in 15.33 seconds (there doesn't seem to be any linkable video, however).

Quickest Trot: Brendan Ryan, Seattle Mariners - 16.61 seconds [video]
I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised. Ryan's only other tater trot this season was clocked at 17.51 seconds, so the season's third fastest trot isn't shocking. Still, it's always a blast to see, especially when the trot doesn't even feel all that quick.

The week's other quickest trots were from BJ Upton and Brett Lawrie. Upton was clocked at 18.09 seconds, but that's only because there was no television feed showing when his feet touched home. Instead, the 18.09 seconds time is based off his first or second step past home. While quick, it probably wouldn't be enough to break the top ten. Lawrie's trot time on Monday was also a very quick 17.95 seconds.
