Tater Trot Tracker

Trot Times for May 31

by Larry Granillo

For some unknown reason, there were only three games in all of baseball on Thursday. Because of that, there were understandably very few home runs hit. Seven to be exact. Thankfully, the Tater Trot Tracker is a day behind, so we have Wednesday's 35 home runs to talk about as well. I planned it that way, I swear!

Let's get right to those trots!

Home Run of the Day: Darwin Barney, Chicago Cubs - 18.92* seconds [video]
A walkoff blast from a giant purple dinosaur? No, that's not right. It was a walkoff home run from the father of the theory of evolution. Wait, that can't be right. Good thing we have this piece from Dave Brown at Yahoo! Sports to clear things up.

The kid who caught Barney's walkoff home run also caught a home run earlier in the game. Since it was hit by the visiting team, he threw it back immediately. Also on Wednesday, Carlos Gonzalez mashed three home runs for the Rockies in three straight at-bats. He followed that up with a home run in his first at-bat on Thursday, for four consecutive home runs.

Slowest Trot: David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox - 26.47 seconds [video]
The seven home runs on Thursday were neither fast nor slow. The slowest trot belonged to Aramis Ramirez, at 23.75 seconds, while the fastest belonged to Marco Scutaro, at 20.94 seconds. Very unremarkable. The trots were a bit more interesting on Wednesday, with this nearly 27-second trot from Big Papi beating everyone else out. The next slowest trot was from Jimmy Rollins, who came home in 24.68 seconds.

Quickest Trot: Curtis Granderson, New York Yankees - 18.56 seconds [video]
Thursday was one of the very few days where I haven't recorded a single sub-twenty second trot. Of course, with only seven home runs on the books, that is to be expected. On Wednesday, there were five such trots, with three coming in in the 18-second range. Granderson beat out Brett Lawrie and Darwin Barney for the quickest trot of the last two nights.
