Minor League Update: Games of July 21

by Kevin Goldstein

I'm out all day today so talk amongst yourselves on this one, but I wanted to at least compile a quick daily for those that have become addicted to the report as much as I am to doing it.

Others Of Note:

  • Austin Adams, RHP, Indians (High-A Kinston): 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K. 2009 fifth-rounder is small righty with big velocity; profiles better as a reliever but has been outstanding this year.
  • Oswaldo Arcia, OF, Twins (Rookie-level Elizabethton): 2-for-5, HR (8), 2 R, RBI, 2 K. 19-year-old Venezuelan is batting .376/.322/.744 in 29 games while generating equally glowing scouting reports.
  • Michael Aubrey, DH, Orioles (Triple-A Norfolk): 2-for-3, 2 HR (6), 2 R, 6 RBI, BB. Blast from the past as now 28-year-old former prospect has seven home runs in his last six games; just .237/.313/.483.
  • Manny Banuelos, LHP, Yankees (High-A Tampa): 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R (0 ER), 3 BB, 10 K. 20-year-old lefty has 33 Ks in 23.1 innings; Just five-foot-ten but well above average stuff and command.
  • Darwin Barney, SS, Cubs (Triple-A Iowa): 2-for-5, 3 RBI, 2 K. Batting .354 in July and .303/.337/.379 overall; good fielder, great makeup, could play a decade in the big leagues as a utilityman.
  • Brandon Belt, 1B, Giants (Double-A Richmond): 2-for-4, 3B, SB. Team official recently asked my opinion on Belt, when I asked why he asked, he said, "Because we just had a scout put a super high number on him."
  • Ryan Brett, 2B, Rays (Rookie-level GCL Rays): 3-for-3, 3B, R, 2 RBI. Second pro game for third-round pick; tiny kid, but big speed, but in terms of feet and bat.
  • Joel Carreno, RHP, Blue Jays (High-A Dunedin): 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 9 K. 23-year-old Dominican has average velocity but killer slider; 32 Ks over 19 innings in last three starts.
  • Chris Carter, 1B, Athletics (Triple-A Sacramento): 1-for-4, HR (23), R, 2 RBI, BB. Four home runs in last three games and 23 in 359 at-bats; .242/.348/.510 overall.
  • Christian Colon, SS, Royals (High-A Wilmington): 3-for-6, R, RBI, K. Fourth overall pick with second three-hit game in five contests.
  • Ross Detwiler, LHP, Nationals (Double-A Harrisburg): 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K. Best rehab start yet; been up to 93-94 mph at times.
  • Nick Franklin, SS, Mariners (Low-A Clinton): 2-for-4, HR (18), R, RBI, K. '09 first-round pick continues to shock with his power; scary thing is that scouts think it's for real.
  • Aaron Hicks, OF, Twins (Low-A Beloit): 3-for-5, 3B, 2 R, K, SB. First game after missing two weeks with a wrist issue; averages are up to .269/.378/.418.
  • Carter Jurica, SS, Giants (Short-season Salem-Keizer): 4-for-5, 2 3B, R, 4 RBI, SB. First big game for third-round pick; still at just .210/.288/.314 in 28 games.
  • Casey Kelly, RHP, Red Sox (Double-A Portland): 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 8 K. One of his best starts of the year; and three straight quality outings in a row.
  • Jeff Kobernus, 2B, Nationals (Low-A Hagerstown): 2-for-4, 2B, HR (1), 2 R, 5 RBI, BB, SB. First pro home run for '09 second-round pick; dreadful first half but hitting .380/.427/.519 in 19 July games.
  • John Lamb, LHP, Royals (High-A Wilmington): 7.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R (1 ER), 0 BB, 8 K. It just doesn't stop.
  • Hak-Ju Lee, SS, Cubs (Low-A Peoria): 4-for-5, 3B, HR (1), 2 R, RBI, BB. 19-year-old Korean is hitting .389/.441/.519 in July and up to .287/.354/.364 overall; plus defense, arm and speed.
  • Devin Lohman, SS, Reds (Rookie-level Billings): 2-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI, K. Three straight multi-hit games for third-round pick; big athletic shortstop has 11 errors in 21 games.
  • Ryan Ludwick, OF, Cardinals (Triple-A Memphis): 2-for-2, 2B, HR (2), R, 3 RBI. Two rehab games, two home runs.
  • Jordan Lyles, RHP, Astros (Double-A Corpus Christi): 6.2 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 11 K. Strange dominant/non-dominant line.
  • Tyler Matzek, LHP, Rockies (Low-A Asheville): 1.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R (4 ER), 5 BB, 1 K. Ouch; Control has been an issue all year with 35 BBs in 55.2 IP.
  • Shelby Miller, RHP, Cardinals (Low-A Quad Cities): 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K. 21 strikeouts over last 13 innings; the Cardinals only trade chip if they want to make a blockbuster.
  • Jesus Montero, C, Yankees (Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre): 3-for-3, 2B, RBI, BB. 8-for-9 in last three games with three walks; up to .420/.531/.740 in July.
  • Mike Moustakas, 3B, Royals (Triple-A Oklahoma): 2-for-4, HR (2), 2 R, RBI. Has gone deep in back-to-back games after slow Triple-A start.
  • Mitch Moreland, OF, Rangers (Triple-A Oklahoma City): 3-for-5, 2 RBI, K. .338/.407/.595 in July; should be a nice bench option in December.
  • Francisco Peguero, OF, Giants (High-A San Jose): 4-for-6, 2B, 3B, R, RBI, SB. Up to .403/.465/.610 in 18 July games and .307/.341/.458 overall; 12 triples and 35 stolen bases speaks to his speed.
  • Wilson Ramos,C, Twins (Triple-A Rochester): 3-for-4, 2B, R, 2 RBI. Batting .298 in July, but has gone 43 games without a home run while slugging .331 on the season.
  • Wilin Rosario, C, Rockies (Double-A Tulsa): 1-for-3, HR (15), R, 3 RBI, BB. Seven home runs in last 12 games and .279/.333/.533 overall; has also gunned down 44% of opposing base stealers.
  • Tyson Ross, RHP, Athletics (Triple-A Sacramento): 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K. 15 Ks in 10.2 innings since demotion; still has future starter possibilities.
  • Jean Segura, 2B, Angels (Low-A Quad Cities): 4-for-5, 2 2B, 2 R, SB. New leadoff batter with Trout moving up; small but can really hit at .305/.354/.436 including 15-for-30 run in last six games.
  • Kyle Skipworth, C, Marlins (Low-A Greensboro): 2-for-3, R, 2 BB, K. '08 first-round pick looked like a bust after last year, but has rebounded a bit with .258/.325/.482 line.
  • Matt Szczur, OF, Cubs (Short-season Boise): 3-for-4, 2B, RBI. Fifth-round pick and former Villanova wide receiver is 23-for-55 (.418) in 13 games for Hawks.
  • Brandon Waring, 3B/OF, Orioles (Double-A Bowie): 3-for-3, 3 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB. Slugging .758 in July, but still at just .249/.336/.488 overall with 122 Ks in 334 ABs; also of note is that he's played his last two games in left field.
  • Jordan Zimmermann, RHP, Nationals (High-A Potomac): 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K. Seems to be all the way back post-surgery; Velo, breaking ball and command all at previous levels.
